I am sure from time to time you have passed up a VW toy for your collection because of the condition whether it was in bad shape or missing parts. Well, this late 1940s “Made in US Zone – Germany” JNF Split Window VW falls in that category of "has seen better days" like it was left under a dripping icicle under a tree during the winter for a month or two which caused a large rust section of the body. This toy reminded me of one of those photos you see of an old VW Beetle slowly rusting away in some European forest. When I first came upon this toy, I had to take a second closer look and what I saw through the rust was truly a "diamond in the rough" as the toy did have all the parts, nice looking bumpers, chassis, wheels and the lithograph interior was in pretty good condition. I could tell this VW toy was a good restoration project and the price was right so this little rust bucket went home with me.

The first job was to carefully take apart the JNF Split Window VW by separating the body from the chassis. There are ten bent over tabs of the body that need to be straighten out. By using a spring hook and needle nose pliers, the tabs on all the tin parts must be carefully straighten and they are also subject to breaking easily as well. Once the body is removed from the chassis, then all the small tin parts such as the lithograph interior and metal headlights are then removed from the body section. The bumpers are carefully removed from the chassis. Next, bend up the metal tabs to remove the clockwerk motor from the chassis (you won't need an engine pull hoist - just use your hands). Keep in mind how all the parts came off since you will have to reassemble the vehicle and there is no instruction manual or numbering system as such and Chilton's auto manual does not cover this make and model.

Determine what color the body is to be painted and select a good color match if you are wanting to replace the original color. In this case, a satin black color was chosen. The body was sand blasted to remove the paint and heavy rust particles. The Body was then wet sanded with 600 grit paper until most of the rust was removed and a smooth finish was achieved. Minor pitting would be taken care of with a couple of primer coats and wet sanding between coats. The chassis needed to be striped from paint but since the front wheels could not be taken off of the chassis, a liquid paint remover was used instead of sand blasting.

After the body and chassis have been striped, the dents and bends need to be taken out. This JNF body and chassis were in really good condition as far as dents and only a break in the metal of the key hold needed soldering. Some of the smaller dents require a small tapping from a hammer or similar tool. There is no need to heat up the metal and lead in the dents. Some model putty filler may be used to smooth out the fine dents (hey, even the little cars get Bondo too).

After the dents have been removed and the body and chassis look like new from the metal press, the body and chassis must now be aligned. Align the chassis and body so that all the body tabs line up and the chassis and body fit together perfectly. Bend and form as required for an exact fit with little effort. This is very important step because after the chassis and body are painted, they must fit together easily to minimize the bending and handling of the chassis and body and paint from being scratched during the reassemble.

The original color of this JNF VW was a satin black body with a gloss black painted chassis (the rust color came later). I decided to go with the satin black look although it was tempting to do a custom paint scheme after seeing some of the big cars in HOT VWs magazine. The body and chassis are cleaned with a steel wool soap pad and water, dried and painted with primer paint. The body required a couple of light primer coats with wet sanding in between until smooth. The body was then painted inside and out with a couple of coats of the satin black paint and the chassis received some coats of gloss black paint on the top and bottom.

During the body and chassis painting process, the tin lithograph interior was cleaned with car wax and the small headlights, front and rear bumpers were cleaned and polished as required. The clockwerk motor and wheels were cleaned with hot soapy water. The clockwerk motor was masked off and the metal wheels were painted gloss black. After all the painting, it is best to wait a few days for the paint to dry completely before reassemble. Remember to put a little oil on the clockwerk motor so that it can run all day at top speed, like a real VW.

By the way, JNF bought clockwerk motors, wheels, etc. for their toys from the company Paul Weiss Laufwerk Fabrik, also located in Nürnberg, Germany. Paul Weiss Laufwerk Fabrik existed from 1919 until 1969 and produced parts for tin toys as well as clockwork motors for many manufacturers. The Paul Weiss company logo was a multi-pointed star with P.W. in the star center.

OK, now let’s get the assembly line rolling and be careful with those metal tabs. Secure the clockwerk motor to the chassis. There is only one-way to install the motor because of the protruding gear on the clockwerk motor aligns to the slot in the chassis. Attach the front and rear bumpers to the chassis. Next install the tin lithograph interior to the body section being careful with the bending of the metal tabs and careful not to scratch the paint. The metal headlights are attached to the body. This toy VW is almost ready to roll.

Now that the body and chassis sections are completed, they are ready to be joined together. Since they were previously aligned before painting, they should match up very easy and then bend over the ten metal tabs of the body being careful not to scratch the paint. All right, the restoration project is completed. Take a couple of photos, pat yourself on the back and display this “diamond in the rough” with pride. Happy hunting and collecting.

Polir les jantes et les pare-chocs, ça fait des merveilles. La peinture ne s'améliore plus je pense.
